At Metropolitan Dental Care, we never use mercury-based silver fillings and instead opt for natural, tooth-colored BPA-free plastic resin composite fillings. In some circumstances, we opt for glass or ceramic restorations which can be a stronger and longer-lasting restoration, but in every case we opt for materials that are highly bio-compatible and aesthetic. We do not use materials that we deem to be potentially harmful to the body and in some cases we advocate for the elimination of toxins contained within dental materials. There can be allergies associated with certain dental materials, that when left undiagnosed, can lead to chronic oral inflammation. We believe passionately in the optimization of the natural beauty of teeth while honoring the overall systemic health of our patients.
We advocate for healthy nutrition for the prevention and reversal of degenerative dental disease. Food can aid in the reduction of inflammation throughout the entire body, including in the oral cavity. We also have aided in the diagnosis of certain gastrointestinal balances that can create a more acidic oral environment, such as esophageal reflux disease. There should be an integrative, holistic approach to dentistry and medicine as practitioners aid one another in diagnoses that help patients to heal and live healthier lives.
We diagnose the bio-mechanics of the mouth in relation to the prevention and treatment of dental malocclusion (bite problems=physical imbalance). All too often, especially in an urban environment such as NYC, we find that patients clench and or grind their teeth as an outlet for physiologic stress. We actively strive to prevent and treat this type of imbalance, which can create disharmony not only in the mouth, but can manifest in the TMJ and the entire body. An integrative approach in assessing sleep habits, the orthodontic alignment of the teeth, and finding the connection between dental trauma and the overall stress levels of our patients are all beneficial tools in the prevention of long-term dental issues.
We are wholeheartedly dedicated to the prevention and treatment of gum disease at its biological basis. The relationship of inflammatory gingival bacterial and heart disease, Alzheimer's, and other systemic inflammatory diseases is something many patients have not been educated about prior to being treated at Metropolitan Dental Care. The prevention and treatment of periodontal disease can also be beneficial to the impediment of a whole host of other systemic illness in terms of reducing inflammation in the body.
