What Is Holistic Dentistry?

At Metropolitan Dental Care in Midtown, we are proud to provide holistic dentistry. Holistic dentistry takes a “big picture” approach to oral health, recognizing that oral health is essential to overall health. In other words, it’s impossible to separate the health of your teeth, and the soft tissues of the mouth from the rest of the body.

Sometimes also referred to as integrative dentistry, our holistic approach to dentistry means that we view oral health conditions in the context of the entire body. By way of example, we look for root causes for chronic conditions such as gum disease. We avoid all potentially dangerous materials and toxins, we aim to help our patients mitigate inflammation, improve imbalances, and advocate for a nutrition-based approach to oral and overall health.

Why Choose Metropolitan Dental Care?

Preventing disease is key to maintaining optimal health, and we take that very seriously at Metropolitan Dental Care. To that end, we aim to educate patients about lifestyles or habits that may jeopardize not just their oral health, but overall health. For example, signs of teeth grinding (bruxism) may indicate high levels of stress, which can not only cause conditions such as cracked teeth or TMJ disorders but can increase risks of infection or worsen chronic diseases.

We educate patients about the risks that periodontal disease poses to cardiovascular health and systemic illnesses. We consider the alignment of the teeth when diagnosing repeated headaches and jaw pain. And, we provide treatment for sleep apnea with non-invasive mouth guards with mandibular advancement to reduce the risks of strokes and heart attacks.

Frequently Asked Questions About Holistic Dentistry

If oral health is part of overall health, why doesn’t insurance cover it?
We wish we knew why oral health is deemed separate from overall health. Fortunately, some dental insurance plans do provide excellent coverage for treatments like BPA-free aligners, metal-free crowns, and BPA-free resin composite fillings.
What is BPA?
BPA is an acronym for Bisphenol-A, which is an industrial chemical used in manufacturing plastics and resins for decades. The Mayo Clinic reports that exposure to BPA may be dangerous to the brain and the prostate gland in fetuses, infants, and children. Moreover, there is a suspected link between BPA and high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and Type 2 Diabetes.
What metal-free materials do you use in restorative dentistry?
We offer a variety of dental restoration materials that are free of metals. Metal-free materials used in restorative capacities include composite resin, ceramic, and porcelain.
How can I prevent gum disease?
All patients should take proactive measures to prevent gum disease. Specific steps include brushing your teeth twice daily, flossing daily, and receiving professional dental cleanings and exams every six months. Unfortunately, genetics may be partly to blame for an increased risk of developing gum disease. If your family has a history of gum disease, talk with your dentist about how often you should see the dentist, and be sure to receive deep cleanings (scaling and root planing) as recommended.
How do I know if I grind my teeth at night?
Most people find out from others that they are grinding their teeth. However, jaw pain, headaches, tooth pain, sore gums, inflamed gums, red gums, and sensitive teeth may also be indications of bruxism. Your dentist can evaluate the condition of your teeth to confirm wear and tear due to grinding.
Are my old mercury fillings dangerous?
According to the FDA, amalgam fillings may release mercury in the form of gas. Studies have confirmed that those with multiple amalgam fillings may have slightly elevated levels of mercury. Although low levels of mercury may not be dangerous, those who are pregnant, nursing, allergic to mercury or amalgam, have neurological problems or kidney problems, and children under the age of six should not receive amalgam fillings.
What materials are safest for dental restorations?
Porcelain and resin composite are both non-toxic and biocompatible.
Does holistic dentistry cost more than traditional dentistry?
No. At Metropolitan Dental Care in Midtown, we do not charge additional fees for holistic dental care and treatment.
