Whitening Your Smile

Behind the mask there is a smile waiting to greet you! Are you feeling like your teeth are stained or looking more yellow?  Here at Metropolitan Dental Care we provide patients who would like to whiten their teeth with the following options: take home whitening trays or Zoom Whitening or both.  Staining can result from a lack of dental cleanings, residual staining from common food and drinks that are consumed, pharmacological medications, tobacco use, or other environmental factors. The common active ingredients in whitening are either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. Yellow stains are created by carbon bonds, and when they are broken up then the teeth will no longer reflect a yellow stain.   If you've been wanting to whiten, and make your smile brighter, make an appointment with us today!

Interested in getting started?
First, we will complete an examination to confirm that you are a candidate for whitening. Secondly, we will assess your current shade of your teeth and discuss your goals with whitening. If you are a candidate, then you may proceed with in office or at home treatment. At home treatment involves the fabrication of custom made whitening trays.

These trays do not require messy impressions and can be done with our gentle intraoral scanner. Your scans will be sent to the lab for custom 3D printing of your trays, which you will return to pick up. Trays will be ready in one week. It is important to use custom trays so that high concentration whitening products do not affect or discolor your gum tissues. Also if you have crowding or shifting of teeth a custom tray will help ensure that there is a more even distribution of product in order to achieve a better result!

We also do Zoom teeth whitening in the office where a strong concentration of whitening gel is used in combination with the Zoom light in order to expedite the whitening process.  There are various concentrations of whitening gel and depending on your goals, current level of tooth sensitivity, and lifestyle, your dentist will help determine the correct product for you.

It is normal to experience tooth sensitivity after whitening, which can range depending on the concentration of the product, home frequency use, and dental history. It is important to inform your dentist of any preexisting sensitivity before initiating treatment. Whitening results vary between patients, and the frequency of treatment will vary in order for you to achieve your desired result.

After whitening is complete be sure to reduce your consumption of beverages that may stain your teeth, for example coffee, tea, wine, beer. Also if you are a smoker to consider smoking cessation products. The right electronic toothbrush will also help remove surface stains and ensure better results. Whitening results can last longer when home care and environmental factors are controlled. Whitening is not a covered procedure by insurance.
